SEME 2011 – From Under Armour’s storytelling to Major League Baseball’s business strategies to ESPN’s “This is Sportscenter” campaign, SEME 2011 was as informative and insightful as any in prior years. Students from the local DC-area and students from afar gathered at the beautiful PNC Diamond Club inside Nationals Park on Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26. Aspiring sport business professionals got a first-hand look inside the business of sports ranging from Octagon’s agency business, to the US Olympic Committee’s government relations to pressing issues within the National Football League Players’ Association.

SEME 2011was kicked off by Matt Mirchin, the senior VP of sports marketing with Under Armour. Attendees were given an inside look into the premiere branding materials UA prides itself on. Branding and storytelling are the two pillars on which UA continues the global growth of its business. Jon Achar, VP of marketing and creative services at ESPN, kicked off Saturday. Aside from some stories about the inside of the ESPN campus, spectators were afforded an experience into how vast the ESPN presence is globally and what the future holds for the sports media conglomerate.

In the afternoons of both days, panels of leading sport business executives offered advice and insight into their areas of expertise. A very timely panel on digital media, consumer engagement and mobile in sports spoke on the topics of augmented reality and monitoring the voice of a brand’s fan base via social media platforms. Overall, the panel experience was highlighted by Octagon’s senior VP of athlete and property marketing, Tom George, when he did his best Charlie Sheen impersonation and dropped a “#winning” on the crowd.

Whether you were able to join us or not, be sure to check out the Georgetown Sport Industry Management YouTube channel for a recap and executive interviews. We hope everyone had a great time and we look forward to seeing everyone at SEME 2012!
