Georgetown University School of Medicine HPSP & GEMS students accompanied by members of the School of Medicine administration visited the USNS Comfort, a United States Navy Mercy-class hospital ship, on December 12th. The USNS Comfort is currently docked in Baltimore, MD but will soon be transported to its permanent docking location in Norfolk, VA. The ship itself is a converted oil tanker that has served humanitarian efforts in Haiti, the Gulf Coast, and across South America. The floating 10 story hospital has all the capabilities of a land-based hospital including the ability to produce their own oxygen, a stocked pharmacy, a medical supply department, a flight deck, portable x-ray units and CAT scan equipment.
