Introduction to Language (LING001) is a long-standing survey course of the Department of Linguistics, providing a general introduction to the scientific study of language. Due to the wide range of topics included in the course, LING001 instructors often use teacher-fronted class sessions. Using technology-enhanced learning to move some knowledge-building activities outside of the classroom will allow more interactive class sessions in which students will apply concepts and analytic skills to real language data and real-world problems. The team of faculty and graduate students submitting this proposal has extensive experience in education research related to language teaching and We will evaluate the pedagogical innovations proposed here through a valid and reliable experimental study, refine our approach based on its results, and then share templates of our online learning modules and enhanced classroom activities with other Georgetown social science and humanities programs.
