Dr. Irene Wu – Yahoo! Fellow for 2007-08

Dr. Irene Wu

Dr. Irene Wu served as the Yahoo! Fellow for 2007-08 on leave as Director of Research in the International Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the U.S. regulatory agency for telecommunications and media services. Dr. Wu received her B.A. from Harvard University and Ph.D. in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, with additional studies undertaken at the National Taiwan Normal University, University of Puerto Rico, and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, China. Her book “From Iron Fist to Invisible Hand: The Uneven Path of Telecommunications Reform in China” is forthcoming from Stanford University Press. Dr. Wu’s fellowship research focused on how technological change affects the creation of communities and its implications for political action, including freedom of expression. Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo!, attended Dr. Wu’s presentation of the fellowship paper “Information, Identity and Institutions: How Technology Transforms Political Power in the World”. She also taught a course on Political Economics of International Communication Policy in Georgetown’s MSFS and CCT programs.
