The best career advice I have ever received is that failure is not final. You learn the most from experiences where you take risks even if you fail. Failure can be instructive because it pushes you in a different direction, but that direction is not the end of your success. It may be a different success than what you imagined. Do not be afraid of looking stupid or weak when you make a mistake. Use your mistakes as a way to learn more about yourself and what you want to offer to the world.
The Jesuit value that resonates with me the most is “People for Others.” I have committed my life to the service of others and believe we have an obligation to help other succeed where we have succeeded. Boxer Joe Frazier said, “I’ve achieved ‘the American dream. I feel it’s my duty to help others achieve their vision, too.” I try to live his vision in everything that I do. Hold the door open behind you and help others us the ladder. To whom much is given, much is expected.
