In Congress: H.R.4846
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4) introduced HR4846 to the U.S. House of Representatives on March 15th, 2010. This bill, known as the Bleeding Disorders Screening, Awareness, and Further Education (SAFE) Act of 2010, would improve health outcomes for millions of Americans with bleeding disorders.
Over the past year, I have worked with SPI Scholars, Congressional staff, national advocacy organizations, and others to develop HR4846. In order to improve screening and awareness of vastly underdiagnosed bleeding disorders, the bill would:
-Provide grants for programs aimed at screening adolescents for bleeding disorders
-Provide grants for programs that increase physician awarenss of bleeding disorders
-Enhance surveillance and reporting of bleeding disorders across the country which can lead to improved, more targeted research efforts
The SAFE Act was referred to the House’s Energy and Commerce Committee. It currently has 7 co-sponors, and that list is growing. In order to expand support for HR4846 in Congress, I am now working to rally support at the grassroots level.
