IS Desk Library Assistant

Student Library Assistant positions are available during the summer at Dahlgren Memorial Library’s Information Services Desk. We accept work study and non-work study students. Applicants must be enrolled at Georgetown University during summer and/or fall 2015 semester.

The primary responsibility of the Student Library Assistant is to staff the Information Services Desk. The Information Services Desk is staffed Monday-Friday, 8am-8pm. The Student Library Assistant will ensure services meet the access and information needs of the library clientele. The Student Library Assistant will help provide basic reference and database searching assistance. By assisting patrons with standard health science databases, online catalog and other electronic resources as appropriate. In addition, may help interpret database records and reference sources for patrons; explain library policies and procedures, refer patrons to librarians and as appropriate, to other library units. Participation in circulation desk activities, answering informational questions, providing directional assistance, registering new patrons, processing interlibrary loan requests and any special projects as needed. The Student Library Assistant will also occasionally shelve books. The Student Library Assistant also checks patron IDs.

Good computer skills; working knowledge of various office machines. Have the ability to retrieve books on shelves up to 84″ high; ability to lift and carry (20 lbs maximum) library materials, supplies and push book trucks (100 lbs. maximum).

Preferred: Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, ability to contribute fully to teamwork as well as working on your own initiative, willingness to learn new skills, maintain accurate records, work with frequent interruptions and adapt to rapidly changing technologies; flexible enough to change schedule, sometimes on short notice or to accommodate holidays, vacation periods, etc. Be able to interact tactfully with a variety of people using diplomatic and firm yet open-minded resolution approach while working in a sometimes hectic environment. Understanding of basic library functions and some knowledge of the sciences is not required, but helpful.

Pay: $10.50 per hour

Hours: 10-40 hours per week

  • Mondays: 7:30am-8pm
  • Tuesdays: 7:30am-8pm
  • Wednesdays: 7:30am-8pm
  • Thursdays: 7:30am-8pm
  • Fridays: 7:30am-8pm
