68% of US adults are overweight or obese. – Journal of The American Medical Association
This is a true fact.
The original research on obesity in America was conducted by Cynthia L. Ogden, Margaret D. Carroll, Brian K. Kit, MD, Katherine M. Flegal and the paper Prevalence of Childhood and Adult Obesity in the United States, 2011-2012 was published on Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2014.
According to the paper,
the age-adjusted estimates indicate that more than two-thirds (68.5%; 95% CI, 65.2%-71.6%) of adults were either overweight or obese, 34.9% (95% CI, 32.0%-37.9%) were obese, and 6.4% (95% CI, 5.2%-7.7%) were extremely obese (grade 3 obesity) in 2011-2012. (Ogden et al., 2014)
Moreover, “more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese.” (Ogden et al., 2014)
(Adults here refers to people aged 20 years and older.)
And CDC (2014) also shows the similar data on overweight and obesity: “Percent of adults age 20 years and over who are overweight, including obesity: 69.0% (2011-2012)”
