Quick post: Article from the Chronicle

March 7, 2013 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday during the “slushquester,” I came across this article about students’ reticence to study abroad. Very interesting, and I am curious to see if there are some good Internet resources available for students, especially for funding.

In my own experience, I wanted to study abroad for a year, but ended up only going for a summer because the year was just too expensive. It was still great, but of course the year-long program would have been ideal. I wonder if I had more information at hand, I would have been able to go.

I will post links here and perhaps on my research guides as I come across them.

Amazon and Google launch e-books in Brazil

December 7, 2012 · Leave a Comment

This past Wednesday, Amazon and Google launched e-book sales in Brazil. I’m trying to track down their sites at the moment, although I’m wondering if they will only be for sale to Brazilian IP addresses. I will edit and add as I find them.

Update: The address was not too complicated:

Nuevos Cronistas de Indias

October 17, 2012 · Leave a Comment

I read an article in El País the other day that reported on a meeting held in Mexico City by the Fundación Gabriel García Márquez para el Nuevo Periodismo to promote the literary form la crónica. (Article is here.) You can learn more about the sessions and other topics at the Nuevos Cronistas de Indias website. The link is to a list of cronistas that the FNPI has featured is here. (From the homepage, it is under the link also titled “Nuevos Cronicas de Indias,” but the one in all capital letters.) The sessions are under “Cobertura 2012,” and there are some excellent example of the crónica under “Biblioteca,” as well as a transcript of a discussion about the future of journalism in Latin America.

Of course, good writers come from all kinds of professions, but this is a great starting point to find the most recent and best writing from Latin America.

Newscasts will be on Internet Archive

September 18, 2012 · Leave a Comment

My friend and colleague Maura Seale just let me know that the Internet Archive has added 350,000 hours of news broadcasts, available here. While its stated purpose is to inform the public about this year’s US elections, of course this is an invaluable service for those researching all kinds of current events. Note that there are four Spanish-language channels that are being archived as well, EstrellaTV, TeleFutura, Telemundo, and Univisión. The broadcasts also include a somewhat rough transcript of the program. For a fee, you can also borrow the program for your own use. I haven’t looked that thoroughly yet, but I’m guessing the legal agreements and fees for borrowing vary by channel or even by the particular program.

New model for peer-reviewed publishing

June 13, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Although this pre-print and peer-review service is currently only for the biological and medical sciences, PeerJ is an interesting take on scholarly publishing. An article about it is here, on a Chronicle of Higher Education blog.

Fernando Henrique Cardoso wins award from the Library of Congress

May 15, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Former president of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso has just won the Kluge Prize for the Study of Humanity from the Library of Congress. There will be a ceremony on July 10 at the Jefferson Building. More details here.

I took a tour of the Hispanic Reading Room and the library’s other area studies reading rooms not too long ago, and learned a great deal about the Kluge Center in the process. A friend of mine was a fellow there in 2008, and he said it was one of the best academic experiences he has ever had. More information about the Center and its various programs is here.
