In the field

GOVX 422 will be taking several field trips. Some are optional, but you are expected to attend at least one out-of-town trip to an early contest state in January or February and at least one local trip to be scheduled later in the course. The Georgetown Government Department and the College will cover students expenses for one of the early contest trips, as well as the expenses to attend one of the national party conventions over the summer.

Early Contest Trips

    • Iowa
Friday, Jan. 31, to Tuesday, Feb. 4
      Iowa Caucuses, Monday, Feb. 3
In Iowa, we will visit last-minute rallies and town-hall meetings held by candidates in the vicinity of Iowa City, Cedar Rapids or Ames. We will also likely have the opportunity to observe, up close, voting in caucuses in both parties on the night of the caucuses.
    • New Hampshire
Expected travel dates: Friday, February 7, to Sunday, Feb. 9
New Hampshire Primary, Tuesday, Feb. 11
In New Hampshire, we will visit rallies and town-hall meetings held by candidates in the southern part of the state. We will also have the opportunity to visit the site of a pre-primary debate held in Manchester.
    • Nevada
Expected travel dates: Friday, February 21, to Sunday, Feb. 23
      Nevada Caucuses: Saturday, Feb. 22
In Nevada, we will visit last-minute rallies and town-hall meetings held by candidates in the Las Vegas area. We may also have the opportunity to observe, up close, voting in caucuses in both parties on the night of the caucuses.
    • South Carolina
Expected travel dates: Friday, February 28, to Sunday, March 1
South Carolina Primary: Saturday, Feb. 29
In South Carolina, we will visit rallies and town-hall meetings held by candidates near Columbia. We will also be present on the day of primary voting.

Local Trips

Throughout the course, we will keep an eye on local events that we can attend. It is possible even that one or more candidates will visit Georgetown’s campus. We will plan at least two group trips to local events, probably in conjunction with primaries in Virginia, Maryland or the District of Columbia. Since the Virginia primary is on Super Tuesday, right on the heels of the South Carolina primary, events in Virginia may be too early to schedule. Meanwhile, the D.C. primary is after the course finishes.

Expected dates: Unknown
Virginia Primary: Tuesday, March 3
Maryland Primary: Tuesday, April 28
District of Columbia Primary: Tuesday, March 3

National Conventions

Each party will hold its national convention in the summer after our class is complete. It may be possible to attend one of these as well.
